yes it is.
of coarse people were pretty pissed off about this, thus death and rebirth was born with the alternate ending.

Yea its more fan frindly, they completely skip over eva of eva.
death and rebirth ends with shinji kill the last angel and thats the end.

Seems to me that Death and Rebirth was just a summary of the series. I think the scene with Rei smiling was re-animated, and there were a few extra scenes with Shinji, Asuka and Rei playing instruments...

I own the DVD, but I've only watched it once - I'm not exactly an Eva expert

Its a gaint recap of the whole series with that ending.
Just like *inverse* said it has some extra parts in it.
