It's not a mecha anime; it's a psychological/philosophical coming of age series that just happens to have mecha in it.AsukaTheThirdChild wrote:And how can i get a friend to start watching evangelion. i keep telling him if he doesn't he's lame but he just keeps saying "i'm not in the those mech animes"
You know, like how Escaflowne is a shoujo fantasy romance series that just happens to have mecha in it.
But yeah, you might want to tell him about all the fanservice and beer.

Just sit him down and show it to him. Threaten him or something. That's what my friend did to get me to watch Evangelion (I had the same viewpoint as your friend does), and now I owe my entire anime addiction to him.AsukaTheThirdChild wrote:And how can i get a friend to start watching evangelion. i keep telling him if he doesn't he's lame but he just keeps saying "i'm not in the those mech animes" plz help!@ i don't want him to miss out on the absolute best anime in the world

The magic words are "Only about 1/3 of it is fighting. If that." I don't have much of a taste for mecha shows either - the only ones I like so far are Eva and Voices of a Distant Star. But I liked those ones because they are not mecha shows so much as shows with robots in them. Meaning that the point is more about the characters than the random fighting. I think that's a major selling point for somebody who isn't a fan of the genre already.AsukaTheThirdChild wrote:And how can i get a friend to start watching evangelion. i keep telling him if he doesn't he's lame but he just keeps saying "i'm not in the those mech animes" plz help!@ i don't want him to miss out on the absolute best anime in the world
And try not to hype it up as THE BEST THING EVER PUT TO FILM OMGORGASM, because it's going to be a letdown if you build it up too high.

I'll totally agree with Sarah on this one -
Exactly. My brother ruined the series for a couple of people exactly that way. It's a great series to watch and yes, you should emphasize the character aspects of it to a person who doesn't like mecha... but don't overdo it. It makes both you and the series look retarded in the end.And try not to hype it up as THE BEST THING EVER PUT TO FILM OMGORGASM, because it's going to be a letdown if you build it up too high.
One of the best things is if you can keep the depressing late-series stretch as an unexpected turn. Had I seen it coming on my first viewing, I probably wouldn't have been very interested in Eva at all.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
