I really don't see the amount of music being the problem, nor the quality of music being released. I, much like Oto, blame the majority of the problem on the fact that a tiny handful of corporations completely own every single one of the radio and T.V. channels in north america, (clearchannel is one of the worst for this) and of course, these people are partnered with BMG SONY WB what have you, who pays to have their corporate partners shill the same style of music on these radios over and over again. The people deciding what goes on the radio is no longer DJs who may be actually interested in the local scene, nor is it possible for bands to get wide spead coverage anymore unless their music falls in the range of whate these corporate bigwigs feel is marketable.
We have the same problems years ago but i don't believe to the same extent. up until a Management change at the FCC (where Colin Powel's son became head in record time) there were laws preventing single companies from holding such a mass amount of media. Those laws have been abolished which creates the environment that breeds mediocrity.
so yes, it is worse now than before, (especially with places like walmart that can make or break the sales of a musician demanding certain content restrictions) but it is not the fault at all of "too much music" this is the only thing thats is allowing people like Oto Atom Me to go to local shows find new music and support non radio friendly bands
As well as the suggestions Atom's made I would also like to point out if you find a nice awesome indie record lable, you can always search around for who they have signed, (to see if you can find awesome music that's not local) For example from my personal musical genre preferance, I've found some awesome bands on Alternative Tentacles (hell they even signed Wesely Willis...(Rock over heaven Wesely))

I'm so far from the "mainstream radio bullshit" that I can honestly say that, no, music comming out today does not suck. Why? Because I listen to a lot of stuff that kicks ass, and I don't pay attention to what everyone's going after. I don't chase the trends... and only people who do really feel like music is completely shit now adays.
This isn't to say a lot of music doesn't suck, because indeed it does. Hell, most of the mainstream is pure tripe, if not all of it.

You obviously don't regularly get stuck on two hour+ road trips where the driver sometimes (or often) listens to "mainstream radio bullshit."Tono_Fyr wrote:I'm so far from the "mainstream radio bullshit" that I can honestly say that, no, music comming out today does not suck. You obviously don't know how to compromise on music playwurpess wrote:You obviously don't regularly get stuck on two hour+ road trips where the driver sometimes (or often) listens to "mainstream radio bullshit."
but I agree with Tono, since I, like most of the board, go across the pond for my music, which happens to be Heavy Metal. beyondearcandy.com is a great thing. Radio is good, if you add the word "internet" in front of it.

I will never understand the people who can actually stand to listen to portable music players in the car with the volume turned up so far that they can hear it over the car radio. I mean, isn't that just asking for hearing loss?Lyrs wrote:that's why the IPod was invented. 2+ hours is easy when you have several gigs worth of mp3s.

I blame the downfall of quality music first and foremost on the lack of good lead singing, second on pedestrian accompaniment and finally on the fact that no one writes good songs any more. A lot of you seem quite content to blame the music establishment, but they aren't the only problem, the talent at least from a rock and roll stand point really no longer exsists any more.

Oh bull. Define me 'good lead singing', 'good accompaniment' and 'good lyrics'.
I'll repeat my point again: even in the world where most of everything is crap (as it surely is, at ANY given time) - there is so much good, worthwhile music out there, that a sane person can't possibly have enough time to listen to it all. It's all a matter of searching.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
