Just a suggestion about overcoming that "where do I begin" syndrome...I find when working on a video where I have the idea and just don't know where to start, I just spend a few hours seeking through the footage and cutting scenes that I like. I'll just get a ton of random clips...dunno where they're going on the timeline, but this often gets me started. :) (has helped me in some of my editing of other non-amv related stuff)

You have registered at the Org around mid 2006. Honestly, I don't think 6 months is enough time for you to be talking in this thread.Kevmasterflashdeluxe wrote:You are right..a lot of editors have problems like you. Especially me. I could do something great, I know I could. But..I get so damned lazy soooo fast and in the end it just kinda sucks
Also the whole AMVing changed. Now it seems more like a big competition and some idiots are just doing amvs to ''PWN'' other people.

Re: Sick of the whole AMV thing?
Very rarely does anyone keep a hobby going their entire life, at one point everything gets stale, just faster to some than others. You should not even worry about making vids for at least half a year, then if you still can't just tell yourself "I'm not obligated to make an AMV", since you're not.hackerzc wrote:I don't know what it is but I'm really getting tired of the whole AMV thing. Just something about it does not seem right anymore. It doesn't have that draw it did half a decade ago. When I have the time to actually work on something, I can barely muster up enough drive to start anything new. When I do it's never some big complicated project where I "do the best I can". It's always something simple and lazy. Hell the last time I actually TRIED to do something impressive was in 2003. Since then I just haven't given a crap.
Anyone else going through the same thing... or better yet been there and found a solution to it?
I don't know, I'm simply curious if it's just me or if something has changed.
And with me, I only get a drive if I have an idea I really like, which...is really the only ideas I ever persue.

You have to ask yourself what was it about AMV's that you enjoyed making them. I know one of my friends who is going through the same thing and you may of heard from him recently asking you a question about the Otakon amv contest. Scary to think he's going to be releasing another video. lol. When I need insperation or motivation I look back on some of my older works. I look back to videos that have once inspired me. My goal is to keep on improving on my videos and I still enjoy making them. For me its just drive and determination to make the best video I can. I guess that is one of my strengths but also one of my flaws at the same time. Hackerzc are you going to be at Katsucon? If you are come and visit my panel Saturday morning at 9 am. I'll talk to you later. Just work on something you want to work on. It doesn't matter what song or anime you use just use them.hackerzc wrote:You misunderstand my meaning. I did not say "try to impress" but rahter "something impressive". By impressive I mean things that have thought, time, and effort put into them. Not some crap you spit out in 8 hours one day.
I use to like making them, but for some reason the joy is gone and I don't know why. I wanted to know if anyone else has had this happen. And no, I will not simply stop. I have too many ideas, to much ability (which I have barely even shown), to just walk away.
Talk to you later.

There are 2 reasons I've only done 1 video a year up to this point.
1. The whole process covered in the Technical Guide for getting/cleaning footage. (I mean seriously people, I have a wife, 2 kids and a full time job that I work overtime on. I don't have all day to sit there and care about what "TDecimate" is.)
^^^ I have officaly gotten over this challenge however. Doing the job I do now requires enough brain power, studying and comprehension that I gave the Guide another shot. Holy crap... I'm kind of getting it! My wife is home with the kids all the time now so the kids are sane and able to entertain themselves better then before as well. I now am halway through ripping/converting my footage for my new video... which should look ALOT better then my last 2.
2. Because I don't want to make stuff I have to "make" myself do. My measily 2 videos are not perfect but I loved making both of them. They were a joy to work on and I am proud of what they were. They enterain me greatly. (<--- Psst, that's kind of supposed to be the point of a hobby. Doing something that makes you happy.)
I will be proud of this next video. It won't win a VMA, it won't win the Anime Detour AMV contest I'll submit it for and it will never hit 1,000 downloads. It WILL however be something I can say "I had fun making this and I am proud of it".

If you're tired of AMVs, do the sensible thing: Shut the fuck up and go do something that you actually enjoyu.

I've realized that becoming simple and lazy was the besthackerzc wrote:When I do it's never some big complicated project where I "do the best I can". It's always something simple and lazy.
thing to happen to me... I began to focus more on creativity
and less on editing. I made a 5-minute AMV with 76 frames,
and I could not be happier with the result. The way I do
things now is that I will spend months making the AMV in
my head, simplifying it as much as possible, and then edit it
in a week or two. There are a few areas which have hardly
been touched by AMV makers, but I've discussed them
before and there seems to be little interest in persuing them,
which is fine because I rather prefer exploring niche genres.

its good advice, perhaps crudely worded. if you reach the point where you're not enjoying it no matter what, why force yourself?hackerzc wrote:That's a bit uncalled for.inthesto wrote:If you're tired of AMVs, do the sensible thing: Shut the fuck up and go do something that you actually enjoyu.
