How much CG is too much CG?
Being a GITS fan, I saw GITS 2 and bought it without really thinking. I mean, it must be decent, right? Well, I watched it, and after I was done, I had the idea in my head that it must have been made shortly after the first one and I just hadn't ntoiced. I was shocked when at looked more closely at the box and discovered it was made in 2004. Why?
Because I thought the CG was overdone. Way overdone. It seemed like the creators were playing with their new toys... putting in a lot of CG to show they could, not because it worked well with the animation. And in GITS 2's case, it doesn't work well. I mean, the beginning... going down the alley... it just looked silly.
On other hand, CG can be done well and integrated well... such as the new Hellsing Ultimate episodes, where it's being used very effectively, IMO.
In what animes do you think CG has been done well? In which ones was CG done poorly? And how much is too much?
PS (and already off-topic in my own topic), am I the only one who thinks GITS 2 is an incomprehensible piece of gibberish? I mean, sure, it's thought-provoking. But I must have had 25 quotes read at me in that movie. That's ridiculous... how pretentious can you be?

Personally the only scene in Innocence where I felt the CG wasn't used well was in the convenience store--they went way too realistic to be able to mesh it well with the cell art. Aside from that though I didn't have an issue with it (granted, it's been a while since I've watched it).
It would be hard for me to list animes where the CG was done well, because in those instances it doesn't usually register that any is being used--it's the ones where it's done badly that I remember.

i don't think that there is a limit to the amount of CG in an anime...especially wen there are completely f-ing awesome ones made completely from CG, as in Appleseed and as most everyone has or should see, Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Those were done real well. I think Karas overdid it a little. Blood: the Last Vampire integrated it pretty well. i could go on but meh

There was a lot of CG used in Spriggan which was integrated and hidden well.
"Beyond" from the Animatrix used good CG and just to fallow up with the same creator, Noiseman: Sound Insect did the same.

Mostly when I have seen CG going overboard is when it is thrown into an animated series merely so they can say, "Oh hey we have CG", but yet they don't have the budget/skills/whatever to pull it off tastefully. Very recently I was watching Fate Stay Night (which is otherwise a good series) and in one episode they for some reason had a very badly done CG dragon that looked godaweful. I laughed my ass off at it. While in GITS, they may have been going crazy putting in CG everywhere, but at least for the most part they managed to do it in a competant manner.
