Spirit Away?

Post by y2kwizard » Sat Oct 12, 2002 10:21 am

Hello, all. Can anyone tell me whether or not the new Anime "Spirit Away" is any good? What is you opinion on it? Its debuting in my city, and I'm just wondering if it's worth seeing.

Thanks, all!

Well, for starters it's Spirited Away.

And second, by most accounts it's a very good movie, and well worth going to see. I'm waiting till it comes out on DVD personally, as it wasn't in theatres in my area.

one of my friends who is a subtitle fanatic got it from japan and has been letting people borrow it, the main verdict is it's good. one person said "that is better than my niebhor totoro" i haven't seen either movie so i don't know what that means. but yeah i hear good things.

My brother and I saw the very first showing at the Angelika Theater here in Dallas last week ......... and it was SPECTACULAR!!!

Simply the best Miyasaki film I have ever seen. (I've only seen a few) ANd easily the best Anime Movie ever produced to date.

This impression is strictly on the bases that I have never seen or heard Anything about it coming out - There's been very little talk online about it at all prior to it's release in theaters here in the US and the only commercializing I saw were a few 30-sec. TV spots. So I had absolutely No idea what it was about, what to expect, or anything (which is really the best way to EXPERIENCE a movie for the first time - you have no preconceptions about it)

Aside from his obviously recognizable (recycled) character designs, everything was completely refreshing and new to me. The movie is long, about 2.5 hours, but worth every minute. It's a complete story, has some incredible characters, a few light-harted scene will make you laugh, and viewers can easily draw similarities to Alice in Wonderland. Oh, and the dub and soundtracks are pretty good too.

Definately worth buying the DVD when it comes out. BUT watch it in the theaters NOW if you can!!!

BTW, check out AnimeOnDVD.com's Forum for lots of reviews and talk about the film - Very interesting stuff - especially the interpretations and Miyasaki's thoughts on making the film. It brings a whole new insite to the movie. But watch the film first before reading anything.

I'm going to probably just wait for the DVD release. I normally do that with a lot of different movies. :D

I saw it at the El Capitan(which has digital projection, oh man what a difference, seriously, the quality was like crystal clear) and it is quite simply, the best anime ever made. Every fan of not just anime, but movies in general needs to see it.

The soundtrack CD is available now although it may be hard to find. The local Best Buy and Tower Records were sold out (I think Tower sold out twice). This is not a Japanese import CD. It's a regular stateside release.

I still don't think it's as good as the Nausicaa or Laputa soundtracks, but it's still very good. Hisaishi is a magician with music.

Side note: http://www.nausicaa.net is reporting that the Region 2 DVD for Laputa (that's Castle In the Sky for anime newbies) which was just released last week does not have the new soundtrack music that Hisaishi composed a couple of years ago.

This is the Amazon link to the CD:
