  • You Get - Split Screen! 2003-09-18 16:37:49 Like the excitement of a kid gaining his first Mega Man weapon, I finally learned the concept of making Split Screens in Premiere, and hot damn, if I'm not exhausted.

I made an SS sequence in the first chorus of "Madness", where Sean Lennon is singing "I'm caught in the grip of the city...Madness" consisting of 4 screens:

    * Screen 1: One in the upper left hand corner, that displays Akito in the cockpit of his Aestivalis going through the start-up sequence in Nadesico's opening. The screens around him pop on with the lyrics of the song. Then it goes to the Aestivalis launching, and finally punching the shit out of a Jovian robot as it explodes into other ones. This one takes up 65% of the screen.

    * Screen 2: One in the lower left corner which takes up about 33% and displays when Akito's hand light's up when starting up his Aesty, then two other panels turn on. Then it cuts to outside his mech when it's being moved into position, and then there's clips of the crew and finally it shows Seiya lip-synched to the "...Madness" part of the hook.

    * Screen 3: To the far right running up and down the screen and taking up 33% of that side is Akito lip-synched to Lennon's lyrics, except the "Madness" part (done by Seiya in Screen 2).

    * Screen 4: Miscellaneous action.

After showing this to my friend, Nick the Stampede, his opinion was that it was sensory overload and would throw off anyone who was watching it. I kinda was aiming for that "organized confusion" effect, though, and I'm not sure whether to be pleased or worried that he thinks that about it so far. I'm just glad that the "2-Frame" blackouts that I incorporated in the video didn't annoy him.

For anyone who's seen Nadesico, the director and crew used a transition trick throughout each episode where the screen would black out for a few frames and smash cut back in, giving a kind oa slide-show effect on-screen. I always liked that and I knew when I was going to make "Madness", that I had to do the same. I'm trying to do it per lyric, unless the same scene that I matching lyrics to carries over into the next lyrics. In other places in the video, though, they can be unexpected or timed with beats in the song. The only place I'm trying not to use them at all are the hooks, except to transition in and out of them.

Half of this shit probably dosen't make sense to the reader, but fuck it. I'm having a blast with what could be an editing nightmare, and around every turn I'm learning something new. Dig it. ^_^

    Yare, yare daze...
  • Cross-Counter! 2003-09-05 15:38:23 Well a lot of inconsequencial things have happend since I've been away:

    * Still working out.
    * My Go game is worsening- How is that possible? -_-
    * Got the SDTKs for Hajime no Ippo through unlikely circumstances. ^_^
    * Started working on Madness - FINALLY!

Still working on how to do multiple split screens in Premiere though, so I can get more out of this video. Even though I'm doing this vid for myself, I still want it to be a show stopper.

Anyway, that's it for now. Yare, yare daze...
  • "I Want to Dive Lost-o Mind...I Want to Dive Lost-o Mind..." 2003-08-27 15:40:09 Been watching some new shows lately. Well, maybe they aren't new, but random events just introduced me to them - Air Master & Hajime no Ippo. Throw the ongoing Naruto into that mix and you have a common theme - fighting. Been wanting to get back into more mind-bending series, but fighting animes are still a draw to me, probably thanks to all those classics I grew up watching in the 80's.

    BTW, another idea!

    -------------

    Song: "Green-Eyed Lady"
    Artist: Sugarloaf
    Anime: "Mahoromatic"
    Video: "Green-Eyed Lady"

Descritpion: I'm not much for varying titles, am I? This would be a profile vid on Mahoro herself, showing her interaction with the folks around her, especially Suguru. Now, the challenge is to make this vid, and to be able to post it here - not to mention, wait for Season 2 to complete it's US release.

    -------------

Also, I can't get that damn theme song from season one of "Hajime no Ippo" out of my head! "I want feeling, I want feeling...itsumo..."

    Must find OST...Yare, yare daze...
  • Video Ideas - Look...Don't Touch ^_^ 2003-08-26 16:03:10 There been a lot of concepts floating around in my head for a while, and I wanted to put them down somewhere so that they don't get forgotten. Not to claim I'm a an unparalled idealist but there might be some cats out there that might want consider using a thought or two from this list. You're more than welcome to, but just drop a credit my way, and that still dosen't mean I won't try it myself in the future. Anyway, here goes:

    -------------

    Song: "Memory Loss"
    Artist: Deltron 3030
    Anime: "The Big O"
Video: "Memory Loss" (Part of "The Deltron 3030 Project")

Description: This vid should write itself, since every lyric from it can be matched up to something in the series. But I'm not doing it until I can get my hands on both seasons. Hell, I haven't even seen season two so I'm not even sure what's in store for me next. With a name like "Memory Loss" though, makign this should be a no-brainer.

    -------------

Songs: "Recess" & "The First Day of School"
    Artist: J-Zone w/ Al-Shid
    Anime: "Great Teacher Onizuka"
    Video: "Very Educational"

Description: Been wanting to do a J-Zone track for a long time now, and these two songs are begging for a merging to GTO, especially since both have a "school" motif. I'll have to wait until Vol. 10 comes out next month though, before I can think of starting it. Then again I might already have enough footage...

    -------------

Song: "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You"
    Artist: Led Zeppelin
    Anime: "Hikaru no Go"
    Video: "Yose"

Description: "Yose" is what the Endgame sequence of a Go game is called in Japanese, and what I thought was a fitting title for a video that showcases the close of this series. I'd like to highlight things like the good times Sai and Hikaru shared, the rivalry between Akira & Shindo, the friendship/pre-romance of Hikaru and Akari (since I didn't get to show that much of her in "Across the Board"), Hikaru's rise through the ranks, his final game with Akira, and Sai's departure and final goodbye. It'll be a fun video to do, and even though I have all the media to make it, I just don't have enough hard drive space to rip every episode of the series. When I make this, I don't want to go through what I did on "Credit is Due" & "Across the Board" where I wasn't able to use all the eps I wanted and had to make due with what I could rip. When I can upgrade to a bigger HD (right now I have a 20 gig) this vid might just be possible...

    -------------

    Song: "Omni"
    Artist: Five Deez
    Anime: Cowboy Bebop
    Video: "Omni"

Description: This one of my oldest ideas, but I wanted to do a Faye Valentine Retrospective video for a while, and then I realized I wasn't the only cat with this concept. I've already seen several, including Tutterbutter's "Western Timepiece" which was the last one I did see, and really liked. I still really want to do this one though, but now I have to do it and not bite off anyone elses style in the process. Just another challenge but I wouldn't enjoy making it if there wasn't one. ^_^

    -------------

    Song: "Six Days"
    Artist: DJ Shadow
    Anime: "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam"
    Video: "Six Days"

Description: I think the song that DJ Shadow remixed in this track was an anti-war protest track from the 60's, but I think it really fits the vibe of this series and expresses the fact that war really sucks - especially for those fighting in it. Camille Vidan - or "Kamille Bidan" as Bandai USA wants to call him - is about the most tragic Gundam lead next to Bernie Wiseman from "0080: War in the Pocket", and was overall the second best lead in a Gundam series period. This will definetly be another lyric matching project, but it shouldn't bee two hard. I'd also like to use some effects in this one, but my ability in that department should improve a lot before I try this one.

    -------------

    Song: "Check the Technique"
    Artist: Gang Starr
    Anime: "YuYu Hakusho"
    Video: "Check the Technique"

Description: I don't know why, but when I watch Studio Pierrot's stuff, their's ALWAYS rotational shots. Always. Naruto, GTO, Hikaru no GO, and their predecessor - YuYu Hakusho. I didn't start noticing it in YuYu until the Dark Tournament when the fights were in full swing, and the wheels started turning in my mind about piecing together an action video based on the best dukeroos the Tounament had to offer. In and out the ring. As for the song, I loved this track since high school, and when I played fighting games, I used to rock it alot. The lyrics in it are also a dead match for the situations in the series and with a little editing an imagination, I now I could pull it off. Now only if I had YH on DVD. Guess I've got a way to go with this one...

    -------------

Song: "Holy Calamity! (Bear Witness Pt. 2)"
Artist: Handsome Boy Modelling School (Prince Paul & Dan the Automator w/ Various Artists)
    Anime: "Naruto" or Various Animes
    Video: "Holy Calamity!!!"

Description: Well, the jury's split on this one. Honestly speaking, there are more then PLENTY of Naruto videos out there, and most of them to Rap-Rock (*gag*) bands, which just hurts my heart. I've been wanting to do a vid to this song the minute I heard it - even when I hadn't starting making AMVs yet. Just picking the anime for it was the hard part.

I have a serious aversion to making a Various video. Unless their really exceptional, they just don't come off right to me - then again this is only a matter of perspective. I also can make exceptions, after all when I can do a video to the song "3030" for my Deltron 3030 project, it'll be a various anime vid to all the shows I did videos for to the other songs from Deltron 3030. As for the concept for this vid, if I'm to use various series, there's gotta ba common bond between them. Nick the Stampede, my partner on this AMV suggest the various angle, but I'd prefer to do it to just Naruto, when the shit hits the fan during the Chuunin exam and also the final battle with Garaa and his "fated opponent" (Find the manga online and you'll know what I'm talking about, otherwise keep watching the anime.)

When the time comes I'll solidify my decision, but right now, I'm still not sure.

    -------------

That's it for now. I've got more, just not the time to jot them down. Until next time....
  • Last minute entries! 2003-08-24 23:58:17 Talk about absent-minded, I forgot my favorite group, not to mention some others I meant to list:

    - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth: 0 (Tears run down my checks like the old indian in the enviromental commecial from the 70's.)
    - Emperor Penguin: 0 (Dayam...)
    - L.A. Symphony: 0 (Well, so much for a second wind...)

That's it. Sorry for the interruption. Yare, yare daze...
