A couple other new animes that have good music in them the kind that's sort of almost techno-ish upbeat yet also have a melodic orchestral feel. (read: yoko kanno music) Ghost in The Shell - Stand Alone Complex, and Wolf's Rain. I definately think that yuki kajiura was at least influenced by yoko kanno's style. Both of these relatively new series also feature characters that are rather withdrawn at first, like tsukasa.
Ghost in The Shell - Stand Alone Complex is the TV series based on the Ghost in The Shell manga centering around an elite squad of counter-cyber-terrorists. Lots of nice eye-candy and quite action-packed... at times. Wolf's Rain is a very new series. It's an anime about Werewolves. Well, maybe really just wolves who can shapeshift into humans to be accurate. Also quite action-packed at times and very innovative. It's sort of like the werewolf version of Hellsing with a wasteland/fallout type of backdrop. Rather gothicy fantasy themed too.

If you like .hack and eva...
You should definitely see FLCL (Furi Kuri). It's awesome!
The artwork is done by the same person who did .hack and eva.
The studio is GAINAX, so you know it's gotta be good.
I don't know how to explain the story cuz it's really funky (do we still use that word?), but you should get it and see it. Or borrow it.
Other anime I like:
Perfect Blue
Gundam
Lupin III
Cowboy Bebop
Di Gi Charat
Azumanga
Naruto
Saiyuki

Although I have not seen .Hack (will soon), here are my favorite animes. I almost guarantee that you will like them:
The Vision of Escaflowne (or Escaflowne) - seems like a typical anime show where a girl is magically transported to another world (Gaea) which is at war. However, as stupid as this sounds, it's very good (my favorite show). The animation quality is excellent (even now and it came out in 1996) and the music is some of the best (Yoko Kanno). It has probably every type of genre with in it: Action, Comedy elements, Drama, Romance, Mecha, Fantasy (Dragons and Swords), etc. and that's why I think it's so easy to like (something for everyone). Also the story is excellent (although a bit linear) and the characters are interesting (and excellently designed).
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Well someone had to post this right? Looks like a typical boy meets mecha show where boy pilots mecha to fight "angels," but that only scratches the surface. Although a lot of people like the show for the mecha and just "bad-ass"-ness, I particularly liked it for it's character devopment (or rather it's realistic portrayal of characteristics in all of us). Definitely worth watching, at least to see what the hype is about (regarded as one of the greatest animes ever).
Rurouni Kenshin (select episodes: 1 - 12, 20something (Sano rematch), 28 - 62 (Kyoto)) - Now first off, I'd only suggest the episodes listed since they are the ones in the Manga (the original comic the creator drew and which the TV show is based on. The remainder or Sony filler and IMHO horrible). Kenshin is about an ex-assassin who wanders around Japan protecting people with a reverse blade (can't kill with it). He vows to protect people because of all the people he has killed and so on. The story gets quite interesting around 28 where the Kyoto arc begins. It's amazing that it can go on for 34 episodes with such an awesome story. The episodes before Kyoto are more to introduce characters, their motivations, etc.
Cowboy Bebop - An episodic series about bounty hunters tracking down...bounties. At first I didn't (gasp) like Bebop that much since it wasn't one giant epic story (like the above, which I prefer), but Bebop does such an excellent job within each episode's seperate story that one can't help but enjoy it. The animation is also superb (set a new standard) as well as the music (Yoko Kanno again). This another anime that is very highly regarded and should be seen at least to see what the big deal is.
Other Anime I like quite a bit:
-Berserk - very violent, but an interesting "ending" and the character's are great.
-Initial D - If you don't like cars...probably won't like this. It's sort of like Street Fighter meets car racing since the races seem like "battles."
I hope you enjoy these and like I said I almost guarantee your enjoyment since I show these to my friends when they are skeptical about anime being serious and good and have never failed

Just noticed that almost every show people have mentioned is new. I guess I'm and "old" person since all the shows I mentioned are pre-2000. I guess if you're looking for "new" anime look at the shows people have mentioned...I guess. I unfortunately have not seen anything new in a *long* time. Funny that I make anime music videos and don't watch new anime that often Don't get me wrong though, those shows aren't *that* old, just not "new."
