Need good compression software ASAP

Post by SD Black Angel » Mon Aug 13, 2007 5:57 pm

Ok, i have this new editing software Magix movie edit pro 12. Its great. Just one problem. When I export the file size is HUGE!!! as an AVI its almost 200mb. As mpg 2 its 103mb. Thats the lowest I can get it. I want it to look exactly the same but with less memory. Im trying to enter it in a contest and the due date is friday. Im not very good at compression So someone help me please!!!

In specific (but please still have a look at the guide):

(h.264 will give you the best compression possible on an easy, simpel way. Don´t forget to check if the contests accepts this codec).

Ok what I did was take my original mpeg2 file and opened it in virtual dub. Then I just save as and used the DivX 6.5 Codec encorder thing. As for the options I kept it the same. Rate Control = 1 pass quality based and target quantizer = 4 and quality = 8.

Now the size isnt a problem, it went from 103mb to 66mb. And ive seen it a few more times and to me it looks the same (although Im a bit skeptical with all the loss of memory, but im hoping thats normal). The contest I want to send it to accepts avi files, but would prefer it in mpeg 2 files.

So should i just send it as an avi, or try to convert it to mpeg 2? If u think I should convert it then this is where I need help.

You shouldn't be compressing video that was already compressed. =/

oh no it was just so it would have less memory but look the same. My video had a total of 103 mb, which is too much for the site. Hence needing to recompress, but its all solved now. Thx

That is the only reason you would recompress, but still don't. If you have the original uncompressed export, work on that. Lossy -> lossy always results in (further) loss of quality, so you should avoid it when possible.

You can compress it in MPEG-2 with the same size as the DivX. File size isn't a guessing game like you seem to think... it's something you set in the encoder.
