Addendum: Don't use downloaded footage for editing, it is against the forum rules.

*facepalm* okay, just go to your file, right click on it and go to properties, the click the "summary" tab and see what's under "video compression". That's there is to it really, no need for Gspot just to find out the codec.
Aside from that, I'm sure most people have already guessed what it probably is. If it's Xvid or DivX, then you'll need to change it to an editing codec like lagirith or huffYUV. In order to open you file up in VDM, you'll need to open it up with a avisynth script like this:
directshowsource("D:\BK Jacoby\AMV\kh-ff\012-Cloud's Tale.avi")

Could you possibly elaborate a little? What didn't work? Was it:FireShadowAMV wrote:it still doesn't work!!

- Right click, properties, gave you an error
- The change to an editing codec failed
- The avs script gave an error
- You just tried to open the file again without doing anything else
