Fucking noobs

Post by godix » Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:26 am

The necroposting on the where is our world going thread reminded me, somewhere in that thread I mentioned there should be a fucking noob faq sent to all new users that links to existing faqs, undocumented features, etc. At the time I had school and shit so never did it, and apparently neither did anyone else. I got a few weeks off now and may give this a shot.

Below is my off the cuff idea on how it should be covered. If you know of existing faqs for these subjects, please link them. I know some of them offhand. Others I know exist but would have to search for them. Still others I probably don't even know exist. I also need suggestions on what else to cover, or what I mentioned that perhaps shouldn't be covered. Perhaps some ideas for a better name than 'fucking noob faq' would be useful as well.

Break it into two sections, for viewers and for editors. Viewers should be first since most people with an account on the org are not editors. The list looks long, but for most of these topics a couple sentences and a link are probably all that's needed

Still largely applies, although could certainly use some updates.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Don't forget the random vid link: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... domvid.php

Good for surprises... Though actually getting a GOOD one may/may not take a while.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I've always endorsed a Posting and You style approach to this kind of thing. We edit video here... it shouldn't be that hard to do. :amv:

Is there Preview embeding really or it was just a thing to add?
And about the vidid, I guess there could be some kind of tip for those that are creating a topic in the Announcement forum or detect somehow that they don't know how to and advice them (well I know the first time I copied the "video template" from other topic and applied to my own :D ). That isn't necessary, but it could be a good thing to add as well.
A good suggestion of things to download (codecs, avisynth; the AMVAPP) for those first-login guys in a more noticeable place or page would be better. IIRC, when I first came I found that pack was useful but only after someone on IRC or MSN from here told me. Either way, it could be ignored because they just don't see it, or think that it's more on the "advanced" style of editing.

Some thoughts.
