No, seriously.

Ok not really.
Well, they're doing four more movies, so...

But then, is that really Evangelion 2? Or is it 3? Or 1.67? Or what? XD

Seriously, though, some series can pull off sequels, but most just go for continuations of the storyline. Now, there are tons that I'd love to see such continuations for (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Kare Kano being at the top of my list), but I'm not sure how many can do true sequels well.

Also, on Evangelion Unit 01's point regarding .hack//Roots, the games, manga, OAVs, and Novels are, for the most part, not actually simple offshots. They all go into the chronology and tie together very strongly to form one series. For example...

I take it, from your post, that you have seen all of .Hack//Sign. Remember the big mosnter that appeared in the end of the series and did something to Sora? That is Skeith, the Terror of Death, a vitally important enemy and plot hook through all of the first game. Through the games, you eventually destroy him and the other seven elements of the Cursed Wave. Your character, Kite, is then heavily referenced in the OAVs, as are many other characters who appeared in the games, but not the TV series. An avatar similar to Kite's is given out as a gift, which ends up starting the whole thing. Then we move on to .hack//Roots and G.U., the second series of games. Herein, the focus moves from Kite to a new protagonist, Haseo, who just so happens to call himself "the Terror of Death" and, in the games, gains the ability to summon an insanely powerful Avatar that breaks all the rules of The World. That avatar's name? Skeith. Oh, and the major villain appears to be a twisted, virus-infected version of Kite. I would hesitate to call the games "Off shots" when they hold so much of the storyline behind The World, both relating to Sign and to Roots. True, they're in a different medium, but they continue the storyline from where it was left, taking it in a somewhat different direction. Isn't that pretty much what a sequel is?

Oh, there's definitely need for some sequels and spin offs. How els would we get the amazing quality of titles like Smash Hit! and Love Love?

I will say I have only seen the .hack//sign TV series. I want to play the games eveutally after I am done beating my 13 other RPGs. But besides that correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like, since I have yet to see Roots, that it is not so much a sequel or a spin off, but acctually just a recycling of the .hack//sign series story with new characters. Which I must say it is never a good idea to recycle a story.

To comment on other sequels posted, yes a FLCL squel would suck hard core.

On the other hand despite my haterad for His and Her circumstances (Karo Kano) I would like to see a sequel so it could save the later have of the series from destorying to series completly.

And to coment on myself about recycled storyies here is a good idea (I say with the utt most sarcasm) Why not make a sequel to Lord of the Rings. Frodo's son veres a recreation of the Ring. The New sarowmon

If that ever happens well all have to hunt down and kill the directors of such a god awful sequel.

No, I wouldn't call it a recycling of the story at all. Roots takes place in The World, yes, but it's far enough removed from both the original games and Sign to be easily differentiated. Haseo is nothing like either Kite or Tsukasa. The story of what happens is different, and, well, it just has a very different atmosphere. What I was trying to get across was that between the games and the TV series', there are many common elements and threads of plot that go from one to the next to the next, as ought to be the case with any sequel. The most prominant of these is, of course, Aura, who is at least mentioned (and usually seen) in all of the important incarnations. It's not a recycling as much as a continuation. There is quite a bit of paralellism in them, but in a series such as this, that is to be expected and even hoped for.

We didn't need Eva 1, in my opinion...

If the animation style being used for Diebuster and Gurenn-Lagan is any indication, they're sure as Hell trying to give it their best shot.

(Granted it actually kind of works in Gurenn if only cause that has a storyline which seems to accomodate the over-the-top antics.
Diebuster, meanwhile...again, between the animation, the characters, and some of the ridiculously over the top antics in the first half, it felt more like they were making FLCL 2 instead of the sequel to Gunbuster they were supposedly doing (and even when they concluded the series, all but one of the connections felt tenuous.)

My 2 cents

Hajime no Ippo and Gantz's anime endings pissed me off so much. It's like I was forced to get the manga of them, not even that I wanted to, but was forced! :(

I better see a School Rumble season 3 btw.
